Semiotics

Morris defines that semiotics is the science of sign (Chandler, 2002:7). Semiotics can be defined broadly as a domain of investigation that explores the nature and function of sign as well as the systems and process underlying signification, expression, representation, and communication (Hopskin, 1997:2).
Semiotics represents more in a range of studies in art, literature, anthropology and the mass rather than an independent academic discipline (Chandler, 2002: 2). Umberto Eco (in Chandler, 2002: 2) stated that “Semiotics involves the study with everything that can be taken as sign. Semiotics emphasizes the role of sign system in the reconstruction of felling. The important thing of studying semiotics is understanding the sign. Signs take the form of words, images, odors, flavor, act or object. For instance in here are the metaphor words. The metaphor words, in semiotics terms involves one signified acting as a signifier referring to different signifieds (Chadler, 2002: 127). Furthermore, signal, index, icon, symbol, allegory, are the chief rivals of signs” (Barthes, 1981: 35).
