Proses Penerjemahan

Definisi Penerjemahan

Definisi mengenai penerjemahan sangat bervariasi, banyak pakar penerjemahan memberikan definisi mengenai penerjemahan. Newmark (1981: 7) menyatakan bahwa translation is a craft consisting in the attempt to replace a written message and/or statement in one language by the same message and/or statement in another language.

Selanjutnya, Munday (2001:1) mendefinisikan penerjemahan sebagai “an act of communication which attempts to relay, across cultural linguistics boundaries, anaother act of communication which may have been intended for different purposes and different readers”.

Explanation Text

Explanation text is a text genre which tries to explain how a thing happens or why the thing is made.Explanation text actually is similar to procedure text, however, explanation text tends to explain. While the procedure text is intended to instruct how to form or make something.
Bellow are some examples of explanation text which are grouped into several topics. This list of links relating to explanation text hopefully helps students to get more understanding about text genres, especially an explanation text.

Example:

Tsunami
The term of “tsunami” comes from the Japanese which means harbour ("tsu") and wave ("nami"). A tsunami is a series of waves generated when water in a lake or a sea is rapidly displaced on a massive scale.

A tsunami can be generated when the sea floor abruptly deforms and vertically displaces the overlying water. Such large vertical movements of the earth's crust can occur at plate boundaries.

Subduction of earthquakes are particularly effective in generating tsunami, and occur where denser oceanic plates slip under continental plates.

As the displaced water mass moves under the influence of gravity to regain its equilibrium, it radiates across the ocean like ripples on a pond.

Tsunami always bring great damage. Most of the damage is caused by the huge mass of water behind the initial wave front, as the height of the sea keeps rising fast and floods powerfully into the coastal area.

Individual Psychology

A. Notion of Individual PsychologyAccording to Adler as quoted by Ryckman (1985: 95) Individual Psychology is a science that attempts to understand the experiences and behavior of each person as an organized entity. He believes further that all actions are guided by a person’s fundamental attitudes toward life. Adler (in Hjelle and Ziegler, 1992: 141) believes that the major purpose of a personality theory should be to serve as an economical and fruitful guidefor therapists and ultimately for everyone, in effecting change toward more psychologically healthy behavior.

B. Major principles of Marxism 1. Fiction FinalismIt deals with individual goal of life, which is unreal in nature or as a fiction.2. Inferiority FellingInferiority means feeling weak and unskilled in the face of tasks that need to be completed.3. Striving for Superiority Each individual is forced by drivers to be superior, powerful and regarded.4. Style of LifeAccording to Adler (in Hjelle and Ziegler, 1992: 144) the style of life encompasses the unique pattern of traits, behaviors and habits which, when taken together, defines the flavor of a person’s existence. The style of life, originally called “life plan” or “guiding image” refers to the unique ways in which people pursue their goal (Ryckman, 1985: 98).5. Social InterestBasically, man is social creature by nature and not by habit. He fully realizes his position as a free individual and his bound concerns the society.6. Creative PowerAccording to Adler as quoted by Hjelle and Ziegler (1992: 150) creative power means the influences of heredity any environment toward a person in overcoming the problem or life.

Marxism

A. Notion of Marxism

Marxism is a social theory that originated as a response to the social problems engendered by the capitalist mode of production: Imperialist war, massive impoverishment, racism, oppression, alienation, the destruction of the environment, and the like. “Marxism began with Karl Marx, the nineteenth-century German philosopher best known for Das Kapital (1867; Capital), the seminal work of the communist movement.” (Murfin & Ray: 1998).
According to Suseno, “Marxism is the term for ideology about the relation between economic, social and political concept” (Suseno, 2001:5).”Marxism is an ideology that studies the social, economical, historical, revolutionary problems based on the social conflicts in the society” (marxis.org: 2000).

B. Major principles of Marxism

1. Dialectical materialism
Dialectics is a method of thinking and interpreting the world of both nature and society. It is a way of looking at the universe, which sets out from the axiom that everything is in a constant state of change and flux.
2. Historical Materialism
Historical materialism is a term that contains all of Marx views about society and history. History itself is a description of past experience, while materialism means that only materials are important.
3. Class Struggle
As a part of Marxist theory, class struggle focuses on the struggle of the oppressed class against the oppressor. One basic reason of this part is in economic, because economic determination makes the level of social class.
4. Revolution
It means that the revolution happens after the struggle of class, exactly the struggle of the proletariat, and then they change the social structure from the old into the new one. In this case the proletarians become the ruling class.
5. Alienation
Marx sees that human alienated from his society because of his work in capitalist economy (Suseno, 2001: 88). Alienated in work is the basic of all human alienation. Because according to Karl Marx, work is fundamental human activity. In work, human makes himself to be real (Suseno, 2001: 89).

Semiotics

Morris defines that semiotics is the science of sign (Chandler, 2002:7). Semiotics can be defined broadly as a domain of investigation that explores the nature and function of sign as well as the systems and process underlying signification, expression, representation, and communication (Hopskin, 1997:2).
Semiotics represents more in a range of studies in art, literature, anthropology and the mass rather than an independent academic discipline (Chandler, 2002: 2). Umberto Eco (in Chandler, 2002: 2) stated that “Semiotics involves the study with everything that can be taken as sign. Semiotics emphasizes the role of sign system in the reconstruction of felling. The important thing of studying semiotics is understanding the sign. Signs take the form of words, images, odors, flavor, act or object. For instance in here are the metaphor words. The metaphor words, in semiotics terms involves one signified acting as a signifier referring to different signifieds (Chadler, 2002: 127). Furthermore, signal, index, icon, symbol, allegory, are the chief rivals of signs” (Barthes, 1981: 35).
